Adding Files

The dotCMS supports File Asset uploads of singe files, multiple files (up to 19 at a time), or through a webDAV connection.  Files can be uploaded through the Website Browser or directly in a piece of content through an image or WYSIWYG field.  The examples below explain how to upload files using the Website Browser.

Single Image or File

Uploading a single file:  To upload a single file, simply right-click the desired folder on the Website Browser that you woud like to upload files to, then click "New" --> "Image or File".

Fill out the following fields:

  • Upload New File - Click the Browse button to find the file on your local machine that you would like to upload to the dotCMS server
  • Title - The title given to the file will be displayed on navigation menus if the file is given the "Show on Menu" property featured on the Advanced Properties Tab.
  • Description - When searching for files the description field helps users identify the nature of files that have been uploaded, how they can be used, what the file pertains to, etc.
  • Folder - displays the path to the folder the file is being uploaded to

After filling out the fields using one of the two methods described above, click on the "save" button to upload the files without publishing them for "live" use on the site, or click on "save and publish" to upload the files and publish them so that they will be immediately viewable on any HTML page that utilizes or links to them. Please note that files will adopt the permission scheme of the folder that they are uploaded to. Files inherit the permissions of the folders they are uploaded to. Files being uploaded will not be viewable externally unless destination folder has the "CMS Anonymous" permission or until the permission is added to the uploaded files.
