Content States

A Content State describes the level of viewablility/accessibility of a piece of Content in the dotCMS.  After searching for content using the Content Search Manager, the status of content is readily visible in the Matching Results area through green ("published"), yellow ("unpublished"), or red ("archived") status lights.

Content States

The different states possible for a piece of content in the dotCMS are:

  • Published - Content is *viewable "live" on an HTML page.
  • Unpublished - Content that has been saved as an unfinished "working" copy but will not be viewable on the front end of the website until it has been published.
  • Archived - Content that is no longer viewable on the backend of the dotCMS content search manager unless the "Show Archived" option has been checked. Only unpublished or working copies of content can be archived.
  • Deleted -  Only Archived content can be deleted.  Once a piece of content has been deleted it cannot be restored within the dotCMS.  A warning to this effect is given when attempting to delete content.
Archived Status

*Permissions can also determine who can view content on an HTML page, either from the front-end or back-end of a dotCMS site.  For more information, please see the Content Permissions documentation.
