Virtual Links

Virtual Link

Virtual Links are alternate reference paths to internal or external URL's.  Virtual Links are most commonly used to give visitors to the website a more user-friendly/memorable way of reaching an HTML page or File, that might actually live "buried" in a much deeper path.  This is extremely useful in sending out Email Campaigns or displaying links on HTML pages.  Virtual Links are true URL's which maintain their presence a website browser's navigation toolbar even after the destination HTML page or file is reached.

Virtual Links can be accessed by mousing over the Content tab and clicking on "Virtual Links".

The Virtual Links portlet displays a list of all the Virtual Links on the site.  In the Virtual Links portlet you can click on the title of a Virtual Link to edit the link or click on the path in the "Redirect to:" column to visit the destination file or HTML page.

Virtual Link Portlet

When creating/editing a Virtual Link, as in the image below, you must give the Virtual Link a Title, select "All Hosts" or a specific host the Virtual Link applies to, type the new "virtual path" to the destination in the "URL:" field, and then use the "click here to browse" button to browse for an internal destination or simply type and external URL into the "Enter URL to Redirect to" field.

In the example below a Virtual Link (www.dotcms.org/roadmap), has been established that will display the http://www.dotcms.org/documentation/roadmap.dot webpage.

Edit Virtual Link

Once you have saved the Virtual Link, test the new "virtual" path by typing it directly into your website browser.
